Is a Purple Hybrid Mattress a Good Choice?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It offers three hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 (Purple Hybrid Premier 3), and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 (Purple Hybrid Premier 4). Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will probably enjoy the supportive feeling of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! Purple Mattress Price
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Purple Mattress Price
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. It is important to remember that feeling can be subjective and depend on your body type. Referring to my height, I am 5’9″ and 125 lbs. I prefer to sleep on my side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. This bed is recommended for combination sleepers who need to move around in the night. It also suits those who suffer from lower back pain and are looking for a mattress that can help with sciatica. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier4: This bed scored a 6/10 on the mattress firmness scale. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. I’d recommend this mattress to side sleepers or side combination sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap up, I would like to highlight the responsiveness and bounce of all three Purple Hybrids. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These are the best combination mattresses on the market. Purple Mattress Price
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I believe the Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for light back sleepers. It should fill in their lumbar areas for pressure relief and also provides plenty of support for those who are lighter. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is the ideal choice for these types of sleepers. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Price
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. It is ideal for people who move between sleeping positions at night.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Purple Mattress Price
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers — The Premier 4 can be a great option for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Mattress Price
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. I use a pressure map to check for this.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. Although the map is blue all over, it doesn’t have a gap at the lower back like Premier 3 and 4 maps. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. Its pressure map is almost completely blue, which tells me sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout the night. Purple Mattress Price
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Price
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
Their mobility and lift could make them a great choice for you if your sleep is disturbed at night.
The Purple Hybrids all have incredible cooling properties.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Price
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. Purple Mattress Price
What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This purple top layer is what gives Purple mattresses their unique look.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. The Purple Hybrids all have the same construction. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
The Purple Grid.
Next is a layer of transition foam. This transition foam allows the sleeper to slide through the soft top grid onto the more solid pocketed coil system.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. As the bed’s polymer grid and pocketsed coils create buoyancy, you will likely feel more “ontop” of them.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing And Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. While the original Purple Hybrid is not as difficult to lift, it’s still worth having someone nearby to help you bag it. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. Any scent should fade within a few days.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. Now, you can decide if one or more of these mattresses are the right fit for you. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid mattress are my favorite.
The Purple Hybrids are so cool! These beds don’t trap any body heat so they should make most hot sleepers very happy. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. Combination sleepers will have no trouble changing their positions on these beds.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It is great at helping you to achieve healthy spinal alignment and it also provides incredible pressure relief. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. Purple Mattress Price
My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
A few customers complained that the Purple mattress was sagging and creating indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. For a longer life, make sure you put the Purple bed on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Price

Purple Hybrids Vs.
Let’s take a deeper look at the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Now let’s compare them to other models on the internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are a bit more bouncier that the Casper Hybrids. This is something combination sleepers may like.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Price
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. Combination sleepers may particularly enjoy this feeling.
The Original Purple mattress, like the Purple Hybrids is extremely cooling. It could also be a good choice for people who sleep hot at night.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
