In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. I’ll admit, the specs certainly sound interesting, but are these beds comfortable? Reviews For Purple Mattress
These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid Mattress a Good Choice?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches.
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
Combination sleepers will love the bounce of these beds! Reviews For Purple Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Couples might not like the Purple mattresses.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Reviews For Purple Mattress
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next up, let’s get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. Referring to my height, I am 5’9″ and 125 lbs. I prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. This mattress is best for stomach and back sleepers, since the polymer layer of the polymer is thin enough that it can support a straight spine from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress truly supported my pressure points, and gave me a great amount of sinkage. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Reviews For Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Light Sleepers (under 130lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I believe the Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for light back sleepers. It should fill in their lumbar areas for pressure relief and also provides plenty of support for those who are lighter. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is the ideal choice for these types of sleepers. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. Reviews For Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. Reviews For Purple Mattress
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers — The Premier 4 can be a great option for heavy side sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. A better choice for heavy people is one of our top mattresses. Reviews For Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. I use a pressure chart to verify this.
It sounds complicated but it’s really quite easy. All I have to do is roll the gadget out and get on board. The map does the rest. The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based purely on these pressure maps, the original Purple Hybrid was found to be the best mattress for those with back problems. The map is blue across the board, but doesn’t gap around the lower back the way the Premier 3 and 4 maps do. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure map is almost completely blue, which tells me sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout the night. Reviews For Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.
The Purple Hybrids motion transfer results.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. This means that you will feel movement throughout the three mattresses. Reviews For Purple Mattress
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Reviews For Purple Mattress
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer compress under my weight, but the foam and coils below stayed firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Reviews For Purple Mattress
What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This grid is the stretchy, purple top layer that gives the Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
The Purple Grid.
The Transition Layer You’ll next find a layer made of poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs have a high bounce and lift the body. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.

Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. The scent should disappear within a few hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
Purple Hybrid mattress are my favorite.
I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. They don’t trap too much heat, so most people who are hot should feel comfortable on them. I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. The thicker models are the best, especially when they are heavier. The Purple is a great choice if you want to try a different feel. Reviews For Purple Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Reviews For Purple Mattress

Purple Hybrid vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper has zoned support. It’s more firm at the hips than the Purples. The shoulders are softer to provide optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Reviews For Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
